loveseat

Loveseat is made of two interlocking pieces held in place by each other’s weight. Two individuals, holding each other up in embrace.

The connection between the pieces, and its structural integrity as a complete unit, is made stronger by the contact between the two, the mutual and reciprocal support. When combined into one, the structure is stronger than that of each individual.

The chair is made of plywood tinted black with india ink, oak dowel holding together its joints. It is 18” tall, roughly the height of a kitchen chair, and tall enough that it’s user’s shins are vertical, knees not too bent. It is easy to descend onto and rise from. The seat is comfortable, with creaky knees kept in mind in its design. However, the chair’s impermanent inked surface rubs off on contact, a contagion transmissible by touch.

In this time of pandemic-induced global self-isolation, the most direct form of comfort previously available to us, a hug, is no longer an option. We’ve watched one catastrophe after another unfold over the past year and the simplest gesture, human touch, has been off limits. Loveseat is a seat for only one person.
